Surgical therapies all remove the obstructing prostate tissue around the urethra resulting in immediate symptom relief.

TURP (transurethral resection of prostate)

This operation is considered the gold standard operation for BPH. Known by many as the ‘roto-rooter’, this operation involves placing a telescope into the penis and cutting away the obstructing tissue with a electric loop. The procedure requires anesthesia and a 1-2 day hospital stay. Side effects include bleeding, infection, retrograde ejaculation, and rarely impotence and incontinence.

Open Prostatectomy
This operation is performed via an abdominal incision and generally removes all the obstructing tissue. The results are dramatic, but full recovery can take six weeks. The operation is only used in massive prostates that cannot be treated any other way. With the development of the greenlight laser procedure (which can also treat very large glands), this procedure is being used very infrequently.

Greenlight Photoselective Vaporization of Prostate

This operation combines the benefits of the minimally invasive therapies (outpatient), with the effectiveness of the procedures above. Jacksonville prostate center is the leader of this technology in North Florida. Click here to enter our greenlight site.
