In office prostate therapies deliver heat to destroy prostate tissue and provide symptom relief. Results are superior to medical therapy, but inferior to ablative technologies such as TURP or greenlight laser. These treatments are excellent alternatives for patients who cannot or do not wish to take pills. Unlike ablative technologies, the tissue is not cut or “invaded”, therefore the treatments are safe with minimal side effects. Treatment results are generally seen in 6-8 weeks as the body reabsorbs the heated/ destroyed tissue.
The benefits of MIT’s are as follows:
In office treatment: since no tissue cutting is involved, patients can leave immediately following the procedure
Lack of sexual side effects
Tolerability: most patients can resume normal activities the next day
Symptom relief: Generally better or at least equivalent to medical therapy
Covered by insurance plans
Avoids cost and side effects of medications
The prostate center is the only center in Jacksonville offering all three ‘heat’ technologies: Indigo laser, TUNA/Prostiva (radiowave) and microwave therapy. The choice is determined by the physician and patient after determination of prostate size and configuration.
We began offering MIT’s in 1998 with the Indigo laser system and soon after began TUNA (prostiva) therapy. These are still used in certain cases
Most cases, however, are currently being treated by the Prolieve thermodilation system, a form of microwave therapy for a variety of reasons.
