BPH is described as the ‘bread and butter” of almost all urologic practices. All men develop some degree of prostate enlargement and to some extent prostate symptoms.

In many cases the diagnosis is clear and medical therapy can be started. Routine tests like PSA, bladder scan, flow rate and cystoscopy can be performed.

 



  BPH treatment options
Medical Therapy
In office Heat Based Therapy are minimally invasive procedures that are best viewed as an alternative to medical therapy. Results are about 25% better than medical therapy, but not equivalent to ablative therapies below. Side effects are in general minimal.
a. Indigo Laser
b. TUNA/ Prostiva –radiowave therapy
c. Microwave Therapy (prolieve thermodilation)
Ablative therapies remove the offending prostate tissue in a variety of ways. This results in immediate and dramatic symptom relief.
a. TURP is the gold standard operation for BPH
b. Greenlight laser prostatectomy is now the      most common ablative operation for BPH.
